Pain in the sciatic nerve: how best to stay on the move

By  |

The term “sciatica refers to a more or less intense pain to the entire back, legs and buttocks. It speaks fluent sciatica to indicate inflammation of that nerve. Dr. Nunzio Catena affirms this view: “the symptoms of a sciatic neuralgia are given from the pain, from the tingling and a degree more or less important than the lower limb functional impotence concerned, such as lameness, joint movements difficult or painful.”

There are many variations of sciatica and all its forms have the same denominator: the pain, the intensity of which usually depends on the underlying cause. The origin of sciatica is primarily related to: herniated discs, taking a posture for a long time, physical inactivity, spondylolisthesis, spinal tumors and piriformis syndrome. Some predisposing factors for sciatica are: arthritis, diabetes, advanced age, pregnancy, infections of the spine, osteoporosis and trauma to the legs.

The causes

As we have already noted, sciatica is caused by compression of a root of a lumbar spinal nerve.

Sciatica can manifest itself in different cases: during pregnancy occurs as a result of the compression exerted from the uterus on the sciatic nerve; postural unhealthy habits, as well as sleep in the fetal position for a long time; protrusion or herniated spinal disc; stenosis of the spinal canal, which narrows and compresses the spinal cord.

What to do and what not to do in case of sciatica

First, we must try to avoid situations that might exacerbate inflammation. For example, too prolonged rest is not recommended, it could lead to excessive rigidity in the joints and muscles. Rather, we recommend a walk or a specific light exercise to relieve sciatic pain .

Practicing gymnastics daily and slowly, avoiding rapid or jerky jerky movements. It is recommended light physical activity such as exercise bikes, and as soon as you feel better, focus on aerobic exercises combined with targeted stretching. Avoid the “do-it-yourself”, if performed incorrectly and undisciplined, power sports such as bodybuilding, can be very harmful. It is advisable to undergo physiotherapy massage targeted to relieve borne sciatic nerve pain and taking painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, but without abuse. If the pain in sciatica depends on trauma, you should run the cold water compresses at the pain. Cryotherapy is particularly suitable to create a sort of analgesia on the location affected by the pain.

After 2-3 days of onset of symptoms, replace cool compresses with warm compresses. In many cases, the alternation of hot and cold can relieve relief and pain relief. The only trick is to not apply the ice directly on the skin because they could cause cold burns, but it is preferable to use an ice pack wrapped in a cotton cloth.
